    • Bennett Brothers Yachts/Cape Fear Marina (off the AICW, on Cape Fear River in Wilmington, NC)

Bennett Brothers, Luxury Yachts for Sale by Bennett Brothers YachtsOn 5/9/13, as part of a North Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:

Upper Cape Fear River – who has departed the AICW, and cruised upstream on the Cape Fear River to the Wilmington, NC, and secured dockage at Cape Fear Marina/Bennett Brothers Yachts, north of the Highway 133 bridge? Did you find this to be as first class a facility as we have always considered it to be?

      Responses follow:

We always divert up river to this facility. The floating docks are very well maintained. Pumpout is routine on Fridays, or on request. Pricing is very attractive for dockage.
We rely on the expert yard for cogent recommendation and quality work.
Management: Tricia Bennett, Owner and Steve Wallace GM are immediately available if questions occur with which people at the operating level may need help.
Although there is no useful public transportation nearby, an Enterprise facility a couple of miles away has good pricing, and weekend specials. Wilmington itself has every level of store needed, including Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot. Many Department Stores and Specialty shops are also there.
      It’s a great stop.

We went up to Wilmington for repair work at Bennet Brothers. We have a cat 23.5 beam. They have a 24 foot travel lift. The work was professional and price for repair work were given before the work. Two issues are when you go up the Wilmington River is try to plan it with the tides, and the bridge to Bennet Brothers opens 6pm to 6 am on demand, then at 10 am , and 2 pm.
      John Pholeric

We stayed one night at Bennett Brothers in early April. The facility was fine. If the current is strong, it might be a little tricky getting into the slip. We talked with a gentleman who works at the marina about continuing up the Northeast Branch of the Cape Fear. He was very helpful.
      Jean Thomason

We keep our boat in Southport and brought it to Bennett Brothers for some pre-cruise work in January of this year. I have to say that the quality of service was excellent ‘“ both technically and for the project management. Steve Wallace is an outstanding Manager. In short ‘“ friendly folks, great service at a reasonable price and without unhappy surprises. Before we departed south Steve told me to contact him if we had any questions or problems on out trip. I did so on a couple of occasions and he came through with solid information and, in one case, a source for a failed pillow-block. I highly recommend them.

    • Wilmington, NC Dining and Sightseeing Suggestions (off the AICW on Cape Fear River)

Port City Marina - Wilmington, NCOn 5/9/13, as part of a North Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:

Upper Cape Fear River ‘“ who has departed the AICW, and cruised upstream on the Cape Fear River to the Wilmington, NC waterfront? Did you stay at the city docks? Did you find any good places to dine or shop ashore? How about a recommendation for any Wilmington sightseeing attractions?

      Responses follow:

Visited by rented car from Southport. Really enjoyed Dock Street Oyster Bar. Best raw oysters. Took tour of the Coast Guard cutter Diligence. Many nice shops and restaurants along the river. Take the carriage tour and see some of the many interesting buildings in old Wilmington. New marina being constructed. Could be a great stop when finished but don’t look for it in 2013.

River DunesOn 5/9/13, as part of a North Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:

Statute Mile 173.5 ‘“ who has visited River Dunes Marina, just off Broad Creek? Did you find this facility as wonderful as it has always been? Did you dine ashore in the club-house, and, if so, how was the bill of fare? Did you find landside transportation into nearby Oriental?

      Responses follow:

Today is 5/12/13. Am writing this from River Dunes. We give this marina the highest rating for best facilities, help and over all a first class operation. A courtesy car is available to go to Oriental. Food store is limited. We ate several meals in the club house and the food and service are also first class, although somewhat limited. Reasonable dockage for this type of facility. Been here before and plan to come back.

Statute Mile 102 ‘“ anyone anchored on the waters of Alligator River, near Deep Point and marker #43? Did you find this to be an adequate anchorage? What depths did you discover?

      Responses follow:

We have anchored here several times in the past when the wind was from the right direction (south to southwest). Just follow depths on chart. This April, with strong winds from the west to northwest forecast, we decided to go up the upper Alligator for an anchorage. A GPS helps on this trip. We anchored up past Cherry Ridge Landing in 10 feet of water.

    • Cruising on Albemarle Sound from the AICW to Columbia, NC, on the Scuppernong River

We wish more cruisers would choose to depart the familiar confines of the AICW, and cruise west on Albemarle Sound to this impressive body of water’s many anchorages and ports of call. The Scuppernong River, which makes into the sounds southern banks, west of Alligator River, is one of the best destinations for Albemarle Sound cruising, and the free (for 48-hour) Columbia Town Docks are a great place to rest from your travels. Or, you could choose to pick up a wet slip at Cypress Cove Marina (see below). Either way, it’s well worth your time, IF the Albemarle does not have its dander up!

Because our marina (Cypress Cove, formerly IYC) is at Columbia, we often cruise west on Albemarle Sound. It’s a nice trip if the waves are 2 ft or less and the wind is behind you. Edenton is nice but so is Columbia which has a free dock, a relatively new shower building and a pumpout available. Nice town to stroll around – waterfront boardwalk – several restaurants. Cypress Cove is improved over its former life as IYC – the folks are friendly and helpful and many repairs can be done on-site.

Statute Mile 127.5 – who has anchored on the upper reaches of Pungo River, abandoned by the AICW, north of marker #23? We have always found these waters to be idyllic. Did you have the same experience? Where did you choose to anchor?

Statute Mile 84 ‘“ who has spent a night or two at Alligator River Marina, just north and west of the Alligator River Bridge? Please describe your experience and impressions at this marina. What sort of depths did you observe between the Waterway and the marina entrance? Did you dine ashore, and, if so, how was the food?

      Responses follow:

In 15 years of cruising coastal NC we have probably spent more nights here [Alligator River Marina] than anywhere else ‘“ probably 25% were weather related delays Our stays with Miss Wanda have always been good but realize some visitors have not shared our opinion. Food in the convenience store-truck stop ‘“marina is well priced, fast and welcome break from the boat.
      Gray & Betty Riddick

I saw no issues with depth entering this marina (at least 8 feet everywhere). The staff was very helpful with docking. There is a lot of very nice grass for the dog to run and a nice clubhouse and laundry facility as well. There are limited hours for service in the small restaurant attached to the gas station out front, but the food was very good. I particularly enjoyed the alligator bites appetizer (couldn’t resist). This is a perfect stop to wait out any weather before crossing Albemarle Sound going northbound.

Off the AICW, at the mouth of Cape Fear River ‘“ who has docked at Bald Head Island Marina lately. Please give us your impressions of this marina. Did you have any problem with up and down motion at the docks due to tidal surge? Did you find anywhere good to dine ashore?

      Responses follow:

We spent two nights tied up at the Bald Head Island Marina. Marina staff were excellent. We rode our bikes and also rented a golf cart for a few hours. The Marina restaurant was excellent. On the negative side, there can be a significant surge inside the marina . We were at C dock and danced around for two days. We did have a great time and will return .
      Tom and Melesia Goodman,
Monk 36 “Journey” on the “Great Loop”

      Claiborne,
We are here at Bald Head Island Marina on the end of A dock. Made “reservations” by phone. Entrance had a crane working on the S side of inlet as we came in and were able to dodge it. The current was ebbing but didn’t note it as I was trying to miss the crane. Went to fuel pier first, Will helped us there and loaned, us an adapter (50 to 30 amp) for the power. He ran around to help us tie up and plug in. Good friendly service, floating dock so goes up and down with the tide; so did not notice any current in the marina. The marina appeared less than 50% full, but was told that those slips were owned. The marina is busy with the ferries, vehicle and passenger. We bumped at the slip, but that was the wind. Most people did not seem to be on their boats so the small restrooms were not a problem.
We ate lunch at MoJo’s the dock side restaurant, pot roast sandwich, excellent ( I ordered it out of curiosity) My wife had grilled chicken sandwich with bacon, very good, for dessert we split a creme brûlée cheese cake, out of this world! We were too full to go back for dinner. For lunch the next day we had chicken caesar wrap at the Maritime Market, best we ever had. However this is about a 3
      mile walk, one way.
In general a friendly, laid back place would come again.
      Good sailing,
      Bob

Not a cruiser any more (cruising is how I discovered this place!) but live here full time. There are lots of choices on where to eat. Here’s the list during full season. Off season, many will close or reduce their hours. It’s too early to tell right now.
      Here goes:
      Open to everybody:
      At the Marina:
Delphina (Opened 5/3 for linch; Should open 5/17 for dinner): Mexican, Southwestern, Cuban. Full Liq. Everything under $14
SandPiper cafe: Great Premium Ice Cream and Super coffee/ cappuccino.
Mojo’s at the Harbor: Full Menu, Full Liq. Could be great cruisers bar but not. Pricey! Soft serve and and Snow cones.
Will ‘O the Wisp: At the sail shop on the marina. Self serve beer and wine. Also have Luna Pops (a fruit based popsicle known in Mexico as Paletas. Outrageously addicting and refreshing! Best place to hang out and socialize.

      Elsewhere on the island:
Peli: At the Bald Head Island Club; by the Tennis courts. Breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. Open to everybody and you do NOT need to be a member. About 1mi from marina.
Maritime Market cafe: At the market mid island. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Market is slightly more expensive than mainland markets ans has most everything. Good selection of Beer and wine. About 2 mi from marina.
Mike’s Bites: at the east end of the island. Take away only. Mostly premade sandwiches. We do expect changes this year but are not known just yet. About 4mi from marina.

Available with temporary membership to transients (temporary memberships are available at the marina and are about $20. Rates may have gone up):
Bald Head Island Club: Two dining rooms, great food and full use of facilities: Pool, tennis, croquet, exercise room. Golf is extra. About 1mi from the marina.
Shoals Club. East end of the Island. Dinning room and Sandbar Grill. About 4+mi from the marina.
That’s it. If I can supply any more information please don’t hesitate to let me know.

We like this one. It’s modern with good staff. Although not in the middle of the other marinas, there is a high end restaurant a very short walk away and another that delivers good pizza and sandwiches.
The facility has a loaner car ($10/ 2 hours) to take you to any and all supermarkets, West Marine and hardware. We believe the better ones are all on the Morehead City side.

      Nightingale

Spent 5/9/13 there. Marina is still first class. Great help from employees. One of half dozen cruisers on transient face dock. Good facilities, kept clean. Floating docks. Easy walk to several good restaurants. Courtesy car for shopping. Most boats in marina are sport fish. The sport fish boat across the dock had two mid-aged guys planning to go out in the morning. They were loud until after midnight and got up at 0500 and were loud again. Started engines at 0500 and didn’t leave until 0600. But before leaving they turned off our shore power which was on the same post as theirs ( we never said a word to them). We’ll stop there again.
      s/v Skye

We stayed there on our way south last fall and it was great. The dock hands were courteous and the rates were way less than Beaufort City docks. It was well protected from winds and wakes. They even give a discount on fuel if you stay the night. We will definitely stay there when we head North.
      Susan & Elden Leaf
      s/v Soteria

This is the first class facility in the area. Far, far above others for miles around. Protected harbor; large, concrete, secure floating docks; knowledgeable, friendly, helpful staff; great fuel prices; huge, beautiful captains’ lounge; commercial washer and dryer; courtesy car ($10); and an attitude to please the customer are among the features that make this marina enjoyable. It is a few pennies more per foot than some other close-by marinas, but the value ratio of price/features is outstanding.

We stayed there about a week ago. It is a class A marina. The dock master and dock hand were very good at giving us directions and catching our lines. We don’t use shoreside facilities, so I can’t say anything about shower and bathrooms. However, the docks and grounds are very neat and clean. The marina is within walking distance of the main part of Southport and restaurants.
I would rate it very highly and recommend it to others. It is also very easy to access, right off the ICW.

Spent 4/30 to 5/6/13 at Southport Marina. This was our first visit and won’t be our last. We stayed several days longer than planned due to weather. Marina employees are great. The facilities are very good and kept clean. The marina is a short walk into town. Nice farmers market on Wednesday. Numerous restaurants and shops. Marina has very good outside help for any boat problems (Snyders Marine). We rented a car for 3 days and took ferry to Fort Fisher and the NC aquarium. Overall, a great stop-over.

Neat, historical town. Took the golf cart tour, went through the museum, attended the Wednesday farmer’s market. Ate at several restaurants, most within walking distance from the marina. Especially liked the Provisioning Co. on the waterfront. Different but good food at a good price. Local’s is a good restaurant where the locals eat. Rented a car for a day in Wilmington and a day across the river at Fort Fisher and the aquarium. Good shopping but several miles away. Marina could use a courtesy car. • Mile Hammock Bay Anchorage (Statute Mile 244.5)

As part of a 5/9/13 North Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:

Statute Mile 244.5 ‘“ who has anchored in Mile Hammock Bay, hard by AICW marker #67? What entrance and interior depths did you find? Were you troubled by any nighttime maneuvers on the Camp Lejeune Marine Base?

      Responses follow:

We were there a few days ago with ten other boats. Plenty of room. The entrance is buoyed with red and green marks and we came in at high tide with plenty of water (17 feet or more). The anchorage was great – very secure and quiet. There were no maneuvers that night, only a few helicopters early evening. Recommended highly. Good holding in mud.
      Tom Law

Very easy to enter. Depths 8 to 12 feet as charted. We recommend stopping earlier rather than later during the Spring and Fall migrations as it is a popular place that does fill up. The is a shallow area furthest in, but again charts are correct.
We have never been disturbed by night activity on Camp LeJeune. You may expect to see amphibious training or Blackhawk or Osprey aircraft during the day. We look forward to it.
Lastly, ALWAYS listen to VHF 16 when progressing further north for the occasional times when there is live fire across the ICW. Traffic is allowed only hourly then.
      Stephen & Beth Deitch
      Nightingale

We have anchored in Mile Hammock Bay many time, recently in April. Entrance depths are good – I can’t remember exact depths but I would say more than 7 ft. We were not bothered at any time by night maneuvers, though I remember a flight of heliocopers without lights in the early evening after dark several years ago – very ineresting. We have also seen during the day other interesting craft – a HUGE hovercraft and the Osprey which takes off vertically and flies horizontally. In April all was quiet. The big rusted ship is gone.
      Jean Thomason

Usually stay there and did again 5/8/13. Entered at mid/lower tide and had 8′, favoring red side. Quiet night after noisy afternoon with practicing landings by helicopters and vertical lift airplanes. Interesting show though!

    • Airport Marina – Town Creek, Beaufort, NC (near Statute Mile 201)

Town Creek lies just north of Taylor Creek and the principal Beaufort waterfront. This former body of water hosts at least two anchorages, as well as Town Creek Marina, BUT we must say that “Airport Marina” is a new one for us. If anyone else has patronized this facility, WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU. Please use the “Comment” function below or follow the “Click Here to Contribute Cruising News” link, on the above right of this, and all (except Chart View), SSECN pages, and share your impressions of Airport Marina!

We have a Pearson 303, 4.5′ draft, and planned on anchoring in Town Creek, after finding so many unused mooring balls in Taylor creek that it looked like they might tangle our anchor. This was the end of April. We found Airport Marina, right next to Town Creek Marina, a bargain at $10 per night including water and power. Owner loaned us a car to go shopping.

    • Deaton’s Yacht Service – Oriental, NC (Statute Mile 181)

Deaton’s Yacht Service is one of two repair yards located on Whittaker Creek, immediately east of Oriental Harbor. The Whittaker Creek entrance channel is well marked.

Deaton’s is a top notch professional boat yard and good for Yanmar parts. Their analysis with pictures makes decision making on what to repair much easier. No concern that they will do as agreed.

We have stopped by Deaton’s Marina several time and have repair work done( generator, rigging, and refrigerator). They have been very helpful on short notice. Their prices are pretty reasonable, and they have a loaner car for expeditions for provisioning and resteraunts. We ate at restaurant south of the main road near the waterfront. I can’t remember the name though. The nice thing about Oriental is that you can anything done except pulling a catamaran.

I hauled out there this spring for the first time, they did great work. I’ve always done all the work myself but back problems and work constraints forced me to hire it out this time. They were very accommodating; I live 400 miles from the coast and they just handled it. They run a professional outfit, I highly recommend them.

On 5/9/13, as part of a North Carolina Wish List,we posed the following question:

Statute Mile 173.5 ‘“ who has dropped the hook on any of the several good anchorages available on Broad Creek, whose entrance cuts into the northern shores of the AICW/Neuse River between markers #6 and #4? Please give us a description of what you found and the depths you discovered. Did you have any trouble navigating Broad Creek’s entrance channel

Many isolated anchorages but good way off AICW. Five foot draft cruising all the way to Whortonsville.

    • Cutting the Corner on the AICW Passage from Bay River to Neuse River at Maw Point Shoal (St. M. 172)

On 5/9/13, as part of a North Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:

Statute Mile 172 ‘“ while following the path of the AICW, and leaving Neuse River, did you round marker #WR, or did you cut the corner a bit by passage northwest of marker #2, located much closer to Maw Point Shoal? If you chose this latter route, did you encounter any depth problems?

      Responses follow:

No problem cutting the corner with other local knowledge cruisers and watching the `GPS’ go around

      Gray Ghost

I always cut the corner – the depths are correctly shown on chart.
      Jean Thomason

No depth problems but one can find crab floats in this area in season.
