Will the Socastee Bridge Be Removed? AICW Statute Mile 371, Socastee, SC

In response to our posting announcing the neared completion of the Carolina Bays Parkway Bridge, one of our readers hopefully asked if this means the closure of the famous (infamous?) Socastee Bridge just north of the new bridge. The answer from today’s Bridge Tender is “No!” Not only is the Socastee Bridge an historical landmark, it is a major conduit for local vehicular traffic, especially school buses. The after school hours of 2:30-4:00 are not a good time to be asking for an opening. The unduty Tender also admitted that local drivers often ignore the bridge’s red lights and drive on, further slowing a requested opening.
Will the new bridge finally close Socastee Bridge?

We have friends who live on the ICW just north of the bridge. I asked them why the swing bridge remained after the high rise bridge was completed. They told me that the locals wanted the bridge kept in place and had it declared “historic” so it wouldn’t be removed.

A Good Visit to Osprey Marina, AICW Statute Mile 373

Osprey Marina offers a protected harbor 150 yards off the Waterway, accessible by a private “D” daybeacon. Thank you, Charlie and Jackie Ridley, for this interesting report.
12-31-16. At Osprey Marina, mm373.5 for New Year’s Eve– only ones there and was great. One of our favorites, not just the setting but also to see all the goats (see https://www.facebook.com/Osprey-Marina-92853570418/ – search “goats”). Brian, dock hand, very helpful and knowledgeable. Diesel 2.20/g. Since here in past, cable tv worked and have greatly improved wifi- even at far end of fuel dock. The grill is a distant memory but the area is now a very nice den/tv/sitting area. Bath/shower very clean and nice- even soap dispensers full. Always look forward to the “goody bag.”

Our thanks to Charlie and Jackie Ridley for their report on Harborwalk Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! and Georgetown. Located on the Sampit River, Harborwalk Marina is only a boardwalk away from Georgetown’s Historic District, great food and shopping, as the Ridleys attest!
As usual Harborwalk very nice. Joe- dock hand- nice, knowledgeable and helpful. Wifi not great but ok [on an earlier visit – continue reading]. Ate at Alfresco Bistro- a little pricey but great! Shower very nice. One of our favorite places. Back here on 1-1-17. Wifi seemed better and cable tv very good. Joe here again and did his usual good job. Ate at a new place for Sun lunch and will definitely will be back!!!! Aunny’s– meat and three “soul” food. Fried chicken, ribs (Jackie said best ever had) mac & cheese , okra, butter beans, tomatoes, squash casserole , cornbread. Terrific- needed a to go box. Mamma Jane was truly the boss!

AICW Crab Traps, Problem Stretch south of McClellanville, AICW Statute Miles 430-433

Our thanks to Dave Boxmeyer for this report and warning. Dave is referring to George Hospodar’s October comments on this Problem Stretch, /160670. Unlike the Chesapeake, crab traps are not the usual hazard in the Waterway.
I agree with George, we came through here yesterday at dead low tide and found no less than 5 foot of water under the boat. We draw 3 1/2 feet. The larger problem are the crab traps. They are everywhere, shore to shore and the channel is no exception. Took us a lot of “S” turns, but we managed to miss them all. You have to really pay attention to the depth finder and out the window in this stretch.

We have received word that following Hurricane Matthew, some changes are necessary at SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Charleston Harbor Marina which sits on the Mount Pleasant side of Charleston Harbor, hard by Patriots Point between Horse Reach’s flashing buoys #34 and #36.

Information Requested on Bridge Heights in NC and SC
Wind and tide play havoc with air clearances during flooding, so it is difficult to determine current heights at any fixed bridge between Virginia and FLorida. The Socastee Bridge at Mile 372 is improving, slowly returning to its full charted 64ft.
If you encounter less-than-charted heights, let us relay that information to your fellow tall-masted cruisers!
Bridge Clearances at high tide from Nixons Crossing through the cut in Myrtle Beach Cruising News.
We have had bridge clearance issues all the way down to Southport, with clearances at 63- at high tide in most places. Hoping this does not continue… Can we get a report on this stretch from others who have gone through today or tomorrow morning? Thanks!

Northern Fields Cut is always an area to approach cautiously and at mid to high tide. Our thanks to Captain Hospodar for this update.
My wife Pat and I traveled through Fields Cut on 10/26/16 one hour after low water favoring the outside of each curve and found no less than 12 feet of water from the Wright River to the Savannah River.

The waterway south of McClellanville has been shoaling for years and as this LNM reports: /159671. Even with Captain Hospodar’s favorable experience, SSECN still recommends mid to high tide for passage through this section.
My wife Pat and I traveled from Mile 430 to 435 on 10/24/16 one hour after low water, staying in the middle we found no less than 6 feet of water throughout the area.

Depth Report from Ashepoo-Coosaw Cutoff, AICW Problem Stretch Mile 517

Our thanks to Captain Hospodar for this report which is good news for all 5ft+ keels through this Problem Stretch. However, last year, depths of less than 5ft were reported via ARGUS readings at the south end of the Cut. Tidal range is 5-7ft here and is certainly a factor in deciding to take the Cutoff or use the longer alternate route, see /?p=141157. Be sure to click the ARGUS option at the top of the ChartView page.
My wife Pat and I traveled through the Ashepoo Coosaw Cutoff into the Coosaw River on 10/25/16 one hour and 40 minutes after low water, staying wide of G “177” then traveling through the middle of the waterway and then slightly favoring the northwestern side of the channel between R “184” and G “185”, we found no less than 7 ½ feet of water throughout the area.

Post Matthew AICW Report: Traffic Light and Debris Sparse
Carmen and Cathy Salemno traveling south through SC and GA report that traffic is very light and that visible debris is sparse. They also report that most marinas look good, but that many private docks, especially the ones with longer walkouts, have suffered damage. The dock houses appear to be undamaged, but the walkouts are gone.

Debris Reported, Wadmalaw River, East of Yonges Island, AICW Statute Mile 490.5

This 10/17 9:00 AM report of a lot of debris in the vicinity of ICW Marker #92 in the Wadmalaw River comes from our friends, Carmen and Cathy Salemno, traveling south from Charleston. The debris consists of a large tree and many pieces of floating lumber. Slow and a sharp watch are called for! Also reported are lots of private dock damage.

Just spoke with Leslie and she said they are completely CLOSED for the Fall season. Going to rebuild, be better than before, and turning lemons into lemonade.

South Carolina Orders Coastal Evacuation, 10/4
10/4, 3:00 PM, SC has ordered the evacuation of all coastal communities and has closed coastal schools in all the coastal counties. The Governor’s office has asked that evacuees move at least 100 miles inland.

Height Restriction at Non ICW Bridge, Pee Dee River, Georgetown, SC, off AICW Statute Mile 401

Jericho Creek exits the Waterway to the west, north of Georgetown at Statute Mile 395. There are 5 recommended anchorages in those waters. The fixed 20ft bridge John Winter describes is just north of the Pee Dee River/Waterway intersection at Georgetown Landing Marina. Thank you John!
The 20′ bridge on the Pee Dee just north of Georgetown, SC just off the ICW which is the route many boaters take to connect back to the ICW through Jericho Creek is being worked on. It has chain link fencing draped under it to catch falling debris. Clearance is maybe 16′.

Shallow Water in Minim Creek Canal, AICW Statute Mile 415, 8/31/2016

This area of shallow water is at the south end of the Estherville Minim Creek Canal which begins at the Waterway’s exit southward from Winyah Bay.
SOUTH CAROLINA – AICW – MYRTLE GROVE SOUND AND CAPE FEAR RIVER TO CASINO CREEK – WINYAH BAY – CHARLESTON HARBOR: Depth of Channel.
The U.S. Coast Guard has found at low-tide depths of less than 5ft of water in the middle of the channel between Winyah Bay-Charleston Harbor Channel Light 4 (LLNR 34120 [33°11.7192N / 079°16.3300W, 33.195320 / -79.272167]) and Winyah Bay-Charleston Harbor Daybeacon 5 (LLNR 34125 [33°11.4410N / 079°16.5012W, 33.190683 / -79.275020]).
