HarbourGate Marina (Statute Mile 347)
On 4/30/13 as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 347 ‘“ who has visited with Captain Suzi lately at Harbourgate Marina, between the two Little River bridges? Please describe your experience here. Did you try any of the restaurants within walking distance?
Responses follow:
We stopped here last year. Our dog loves marinas where they are given treats in the office, and Suzi exceeded his expectations (she was very helpful and friendly to us as well)! This is a very easy in and out stop, with fuel and pumpout. All floating docks. We did eat at the adjacent Filet’s Restaurant, and it was very nice as well.

Harbourgate has been our home away from home for the last two years. The service is superb, the water is fresh to brackish, and the location is ideal. One of the best features is their harbour cam that allows a boat owner to see his boat even when he is away.

Cowen Creek Anchorage (Statute Mile 544.5)
On 4/30/13 as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 544.5 ‘“ anyone tried anchoring on the waters of Cowen Creek, north, northeast of AICW marker #33? Were you able to successfully avoid the surrounding shoals as you entered this stream? Where did you drop the hook? Please give us your overall impressions of this anchorag.
Responses follow:
We anchored there on 4/18/13. We and buddy boat anchored about 2 miles upstream along the south shore, just above the small island on the north side. Friends anchored 1/2 mile further up-stream in the south leg. No one had any problems with shoaling. We were well protected from the east wind and expected potection from the forecast south wind. By morning the south wind made the anchorage a bit rolly but quite acceptable. I would probably go a bit further upstream into the south leg for better protection.

Just followed the Chart Plotter and watched the depth sounder and had plenty of room between the charted shoals. Followed our bread crumb trail out thenext day. Good water depth for our 5 ft draft and real good mud holdingground. Enjoyed our stay at Lat 32 Deg 21.498 N Lon 081 Deg 38.527 W7 ft under the keel. Plenty of swing room. Good anchorage.

Yes, this is a lovely anchorage, highly recommended. It’s a large open area, especially attractive for larger vessels or those wanting plenty of swinging room. It’s well protected with land on 270 degrees, and a shallow sand bar across the open south side. The entrance doesn’t have channel markers, but it’s plenty wide and deep and doesn’t offer any navigation problems.
Most boats anchor in the wide part of the creek, just beyond the entrance. There are 8′ tides, so there will be a reversing current. If there is really severe weather coming, you can proceed further up the creek to a three way split. Take the branch on your left into Distant Island Creek, and it will continue around to another anchorage area that is a local “hurricane hole”.

Lady’s Island Marina (Statute Mile 536.5)
On 4/30/13 as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 536.5 ‘“ who has spent a night or two at either of the principal Beaufort, SC marinas ‘“ Downtown Beaufort Marina and/or Lady’s Island Marina. Please give us a full report.
Responses follow:
Tied up at Lady’s Island Marina from 4/19 to 4/25/13. Small marina, average facilities, good protection. Ernie, dockmaster, is the only marina person but gets help from other live-aboards to assist in docking. Entrance to creek is shoaled on north side. Stay close to causeway and south shore going into creek. Good, very busy restaurant on site but only open for evenings. Walking distance, 5 blocks, to almost any shopping or service you desire, including numerous restaurants. Our overall choice for a Beaufort marina, but not an easy choice to make.

Rock Chalk stayed at LIM on April 13th. The people were great- loaned us 2 bikes to cross bridge into Beaufort. We ate at Dockside restaurant and enjoyed our meal- typical port food. Our only complaint was the incredible number of no-see-ums! The pilot house was
covered in the morning and we had so many bites. Not sure the marina can do anything about that.

Lady’s Island marina is open to transients, but has limited services. The marina converted to private ownership dockominiums some years back. Owners who don’t have a boat in their slip rent spaces through the on site manager. The marina doesn’t have a ships store or fuel. On the plus side, it’s in a well protected location and there is a nice seafood restaurant adjacent to the marina.

Response to the above posting by “Rapid Roy” from the management of Lady’s Island Marina:
One of the reviews (Rapid Roy s/v `Gideon’) said our slips are individually owned (as condos) and are rented by LIM. That’s not accurate, tho I can understand the confusion. Only the slips in 3 of the 5 docks that make up the marina are individually owned. LIM manages those docks/slips for the condo ass’n.
LIM itself owns all slips in the 2 docks that are next to the boathouse and manager’s office and these are the slips that we rent out to transient and longer term guests.
Since one of your readers mentioned it I wanted to clarify the situation. Thanks.

There is a new Dockside [Restaurant] (same owner [as the Dockside in Port Royal]) that has reopened the restaurant right next to the Lady’s Island Marina. Same excellent food. Easy access if staying at the Lady’s Island Marina or a walk/bike across the `swing bridge’ from Beaufort.

Beaufort, SC Dining (Statute Mile 536.5)

Statute Mile 536.5 ‘“ we could really use some shoreside dining recommendations for Beaufort, SC. Anyone have a good/bad dining experience here?

We have stopped in Beaufort numerous times traveling up and down the SC coast. While our favorite “gastro-city” is without question Charleston, Beaufort really holds its own. Its much smaller in size and has a very local and friendly feel.
Here’s a list of the places we have, and will frequent.
Beaufort Dining – all but two of these are walking distance of the Beaufort Downtown Marina. One is across the lift bridge and another is down in Port Royal.
Best Breakfast – Blackstone’s Cafe (the corned beef hash is fabulous). Bagel & Lox are quite good as well.
Best Bagles – Palm & Moon Bagel Co. Good internet connection here as well.
Best Coffee House – Common Ground on the downtown waterfront.
Best Gastropub (with great gourmet food) – The Old Bull Tavern – Old Bull Tavern opened in August 2012. Off the beaten Bay Street path, albeit just a few feet, you’ll find “a gastropub-styled menu with an aggressive drink selection, and a local twist.” What’s a gastropub you ask? A small restaurant that serves alcohol, as well as a variety of quality craft beers and a wonderful wine selection. Frequent changes and additions to the menu with fresh ingredients. Already very popular. A new gem in the Beaufort dining scene. Don’t miss it.
Best Tapas – Emily’s – Vast selection of great tapas.
Best Burger & Beer – Luther’s on the waterfront. Home to the NFL Ticket on Sunday’s.
Best Upscale Dining – Saltus on the waterfront, Wren #2 Very elegant with wonderful food and prices to go along.
Best Outdoor Lunch – Nippy’s – Oyster Poor Boys!
Best BBQ Wings & Ribs – “Q” on the Bay – Wonderful & different BBQ wings and great ribs. Also downtown’s best craft beer election.
Panini’s – You will do yourself well if you avoid this place on weekend evenings. In our time stopping here there have been several major fights and disturbances. It all seems to stem from this establishment’s desire to feature music on the weekend that attracts the wrong crowd. When local youth get tangled up with young Marines from Paris Island, there’s not much good going to come of it.

St. Johns Yacht Harbor (Statute Mile 472.5)
On 4/30/13 as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 472.5 ‘“ Who has spent some tme at St. Johns Yacht Harbor, on the Stono River, south of the AICW’s entrance into Elliott Cut. Did you find this facility as nice as we have always discovered it to be? Did you try out the second story cruisers’ lounge? How about the swimming pool?
Responses follow:
Stayed there in spring and fall of 2012. Will stay there again. Some of the nicest facilities anywhere. Be careful if not arriving at slack current. Didn’t try pool or lounge. Could use a better eating facility and/or a courtesy car.

We spent two nights at St. John’s for our Charleston visit. It was Race Week and all our normal venues were taken. This was our second visit and things are still excellent. The best change is that they now have a modern courtesy car for local shopping trips. Normally we rent a car from this marina to visit the city and surrounding areas. Enterprise has several offices that will pick you up. We were able to use the courtesy car the first evening to see a music performance at the Circular Congregational Church, which saved us a days car
rental.
After 9 years of doing tourist parts of Charleston, it is a nice change to tour the outskirts. BTW it was too cold for the pool but last year it was a refreshing stop. We did not use the lounge.

Whiteside Creek Anchorage (Statute Mile 451.5)
On 4/30/13, as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 451.5 ‘“ anyone anchored on Whiteside Creek, off the AICW’s northwestern banks, north of marker #97? What depths did you find? Was the lee of the surrounding shores good enough to afford you a comfortable evening?
Responses follow:
Anchored there 4/25/13. Went in at low tide. Had 14′ all the way in. Anchored before where chart shows 11′ (another boat anchored at that spot). Had storm but no holding problems. Gave anchorage 4 stars. Creek is much narrower than looks at high tide but depth was 14′ from bank to bank when tide is out.

Mosquito Creek – Ashepoo River Anchorage (Statute Mile 513)
On 4/30/13 as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 513 ‘“ anyone leave the ICW, cruise north on the Ashepoo River, and anchor or just visit Mosquito Creek? If you anchored, what were your impressions here? Did you dinghy ashore and purchase some fresh seafood at the commercial establishment?
Responses follow:
We have visited Mosquito Creek three times in the last six months, and enjoyed our time there. There is room to anchor by the last of the private docks on the creek and around the bend. Holding was good with great protection from fetch. We also spent one night at the B&B Seafood docks. They charge $25/night, for which you get a dock and access to shore. Just down the street, the SC Department of Natural Resources has a large grassy area where your dog can exercise. If you have bicycles, there is a long road though wildlife refuge areas to explore. The next road and intersection is 16 miles away. While the road has no bike lane, the traffic is so light that there are no safety issues. The only business in Bennetts Point is the B&B, which has fresh shrimp, if the shrimp boat has been out, and a few convenience store items.

Downtown Marina of Beaufort (Statute Mile 536.5)
On 4/30/13, as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 536.5 ‘“ who has spent a night or two at either of the principal Beaufort, SC marinas ‘“ Downtown Beaufort Marina and/or Lady’s Island Marina. Please give us a full report.
Responses follow:
We stayed there last fall(November). Rate was 2.00 a ft. There are a number of good restaurants just north of the marina at River Walk. We had lunch at two of them and were quite happy. There is a car for resupply and the marina staff could not be more helpful.

Bermudiana has stayed at the Town Docks many times. We love it as we can walk down the street and see everything of interest. Lots of excellent restaurants .
People at the marina are very nice to the boaters.
The ramp up from the dock is SUPER STEEP at high tide !!!!
The marsh otters were coming aboard at night to sit on the back swim area of the power boats..they do their thing all over the boat…but..the marina is trying hard to stop them !
The current on the outside is fast. The docks are easy to get into and out of and the passengers will have no problems getting on and off the boat .
The marina car is great and you can go about a mile or so up the street to the grocery store and get anything you need.
The showers are clean and are great .
We can not say enough good things about this marina.

Great Location and marina with all the facilities. Courtesy car. Day Dock for dingys or boats as large as 45 foot, first come first serve, gotta be out by midnight. They are working on installing mooring balls in the near future. The current can be quick and tricky at times, the staff will always have you come in against the current. Listen to them, they are very helpful.

We enjoyed two nights at the Beaufort Town Marina in June of 2011. A great location with nice people and they even offer you a `courtesy car’ for grocery shopping. The docks get a little rocky when the wind is out of the S or SW ‘“ we were on an outside tie-up. The shore power on our dock kept tripping ‘“ we were at the end of the dock and it was totally full ‘“ not enough power to handle the load. Don’t miss taking a guided tour of the town ‘“ great history.

Charleston, SC Dining Recommendations (Statute Mile 469)
As part of a 4/30/13 South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 469 ‘“ please provide your fellow cruisers with some Charleston dining and sightseeing recommendations
Responses follow:
During this past weekend [May, 2013], we hunkered down in the Charleston Maritime Center during gale force winds. During respites from weather, we had an opportunity to walk around the downtown, Historic Charleston market area. There are many excellent restaurants from which to choose with a price range of low to high. Three moderate ones are “Amen”, “Magnolia”, and “S.N.O.B.”(Slightly North of Broad). All are close to each other on East Bay Street, but many other restaurants are also nearby. I chose “S.N.O.B.” from past recommendations, and was not disappointed. I walked in dressed with boating clothes, had no reservation, but was seated almost immediately. The atmosphere is classic Charleston, and the staff was pleasant, young and busy. I was quickly served warm sourdough and cornbread cubes (some of the best I’ve tasted) with softened butter. My server, Kyle, recommended an Atlas Peak Cabernet to compliment my order of Shrimp ‘n Grits. My meal was an excellent example of a classic, low country, recipe that was one of the best. For dessert, I tried the strawberry shortcake because the shortcake is a homemade cornbread pudding that reminded me briefly of “cornbread flan”. With blueberries added for color and taste along with a sweet sauce, it was a unique finish to a wonderful meal.
S.N.O.B. is billed as a Maverick Southern Kitchen; it offers why southern cooking is loved, and why Southern Hospitality is cherished. Ask for Kyle Smoak, she will brighten your day.

A fun trip with a car is the firefly distillery about thirty minutes outside of town. There is a wonderful barabcue place on the right (J & D shack). They have a buffet with the best Fried Chicken I have ever had. Probably not healthy but good. Fish is an excellent seafood place, and Tratatorra Lucca is both good and interesting.

We stayed at the Maritime marina. It is an easy walk to all of downtown Charleston. Dining is a delight with lots of choices. Fig offers a fabulous fine dining experience. The servers really know the menu and the food is great. Husk is highly rated but it is really difficult to get an evening reservation. We were able to get a lunch reservation and enjoyed the meal. The Pavilion roof top bar is a great place to have a cocktail and watch the sunset. The pizza was pretty good too – thin crust. Hominy grill was quite a hike-2m- but breakfast
was great. Best grits ever. There are many restaurants to choose from but we can recommend trying these four.
Rock Chalk
You need a car for this visit but if you want “real” soul food, head for Bertha’s Kitchen in North Charleston at 2332 Meeting St Rd. It is a neighborhood place, nothing like the excellent Jestines which is gentrified soul food on Meeting St just north of Hymans and Sticky Fingers Ribs. Fried pork chops, fried chicken, okra soup, corn bread, Mac and cheese unlike any I have tasted, Lima beans. All so flavorful and like Berthas mama made. All of the other patrons were locals getting their regular meals with many getting the $4
dinner special. For use dinner for 2 under $20.
Too much to describe here. Look at Yelp listing. Also, the best martini in town and maybe in the south is at the hotel in Charleston Place with and entrance on Meeting just north of Market.

Minim Creek Anchorage (Statute Mile 415.5)
As part of a 4/30/13 South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 415.5 ‘“ who has anchored on the waters of Minim Creek, south of AICW marker #4? Did you find sufficient swing room and depths here? Would you recommend this anchorage to fellow cruisers?
Responses follow:
We anchored in 8 feet at mid tide. There is plenty of swing room for a 41ft cat proably enough for a 50 ft monohull. We anchored seaward.

We anchored on the western branch of Minim Creek, just past the dock. There was plenty of swing room and good protection from fetch. Very quiet area, so remote that no lights could be seen at night. Our kind of anchorage. It was a good stop for us to stage for a morning arrival at the Georgetown Public Docks, so we could visit the town during our day-only free stay.

Georgetown Dining/Sightseeing Recommendations (Statute Mile 403)

Statute Mile 403 ‘“ any dining and/or sightseeing recommendations in histroic, downtown Georgetown, SC will be much appreciated

Rice Patty Restaurant in the old bank on main street is excellent.

Nice shore facilities, very nice town, some good restaurants (try Limp’in Jane’s and Aunnies), good stores and shops. Grocery will send car but is only a nice walk anyway. Interesting history, take tour and see rice museum. Will stop here again in future.

We always stop at Thomas’ Cafe for breakfast and Kudzu Bakery for bread, cakes and muffins.

Be sure to tour the local museum and have dinner at the Rice Paddy Restaurant. We rate both the restaurant and the marina as among the best on the AICW from Norfolk to Florida.

Barefoot Marina (Statute Mile 353.5)
As part of a 4/30/13 South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 353.5 ‘“ who has stopped at Barefoot Marina, , west of AICW marker #21A, since its change of ownership and management? Please tell us about your experience here? Did you check out the new, shoreside restaurant?
Responses follow:
Helpful dockmaster, Cheap fuel, a pool and hot tub with nice showers. The on shore restaurant is a typical marina restaurant with a good raw bar and happy hour till 6pm. The food was good, not great.

Stayed here 4/28 and 4/29/13. Stayed here in fall. Stayed on face dock with no problems. Could have gone to inside dock if desired. Great help docking. Good shore facilities. Now has decent restaurant which is big feature due to distance to restaurants on east shore. Good shopping within a couple of miles but no way, except cab, to get there. Good place to stop for night since anchorages are limited in area. Can’t beat the $1.25/ft. price given the nice facility. Will stop again.

Port Royal Landing Marina (Statute Mile 539)

Statute Mile 539 ‘“ who has stopped lately at Port Royal Landing Marina, hard by the western AICW shores, north of the McTeer bridge? Please tell us about your experiences and impressions.

Great Marina, excellent facilities, just too far from town.

Spent 6 days there last fall going south. Great marina, excellent people, transient car, decent marine store, OK restaurant. The crew smoked six turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner for the live-aboards and transients. A bit open to north and south winds. Would stop there again.

I stayed at the Port Royal Landing Marina on April 18th. Even though the current was rather swift I was able to turn my 32′ Grand Banks around and dock on the inside of the face dock into the current. The dock helpers were great! The marina manager was a young man who was full of southern hospitality and made me feel very welcome. We were given a little goodie bag with several interesting items. While my wife borrowed the courtesy truck and ran errands around town, I borrowed one of the courtesy bikes and rode over the bridge to Lady’s Island. Had a few cold beers and shrimp basket at the local restaurant. Everything was delicious. Will definitely make this a stop on my return trip through this area.

Port Royal Landing is a truly premier operation. Tom Wilson and his staff are really wonderful! A class act! It’s a long walk from the dock to the marina/restaurant, but they’ll come and get ya in a golf cart if you have mobility problems.

Port Royal Landing marina is great place. It’s a friendly, family operated facility. They take care of their customers! The Back Porch Grill is the on-site restaurant; the marina has gasoline, diesel, and a ships store, and a courtesy car (pickup truck) is available. If you stay two nights, the third night is free. AND… the local live-aboards host a pot-luck cookout on the marina deck every Friday. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Battery Creek Anchorage and Dockside Restaurant (Statute Mile 542)
On 4/30/13, as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 542 ‘“ we would like to hear from those of you who have anchored on Battery Creek, hard by the historic community of Port Royal. Where did you anchor? Did you dinghy ashore to Dockside Restaurant? If so, how was the food?
Responses follow:
In my opinion, Dockside Restaurant is one of the top 5 restaurants in [the] Beaufort [area]. Price, Portion Size, Atmosphere are all great. You gotta try the cornbread ( or what I call CAKE!) they bring to your table before the meal. I have never anchored, but I have seen several boats just north of the restaurant. There is a dock which can accommodate a trawler or dingys is available.

This is another nice anchorage, but not as nice as Cowan Creek. It’s main attraction is being adjacent to the best seafood restaurant in the area, which has a courtesy dock you can dinghy to.
The anchorage is up Battery Creek, past the old port facilities and past the Dockside Restaurant, where you will see shrimp boats docked. Another 500 feet straight ahead is an anchorage area where you’ll see several local boats permanently moored. DO NOT try to get behind them, closer to the shoreline; the wide expanse of water north of the moored boats is shallow.
The Dockside Restaurant has a great local reputation. There is a courtesy dock which you won’t see initially. It’s out of sight behind the shrimp boats, but it’s accessible by dinghy or small run about if you go around the south end of the shrimp boats. The dock can be used by small boats but it isn’t large enough for a cruising sailboat or trawler.

Elliott Cut – Wappoo Creek Section of the AICW (Statute Miles 472 to 469)
On 4/30/13, as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 472 to 469 ‘“ has anyone had problems with the strong tidal currents barreling through the Elliott Cut ‘“ Wappoo Creek section of the AICW, between the Stono and Ashley Rivers? Did you have problems keeping off the morning and afternoon restricted bascule bridge which crosses these waters east of marker #7?

We have been through Elliott Cut -Wapoo Creek Bridge many times. No problem with current, They have always been managable. I do put out a Security Call on Both VHF 13/16 for commercial traffic. Transited the cut on 4-19-13 on a flooding tide. Dropped the Antenna’s and took our 30 ft Air draft right under the bridge with no opening necessary any restrictiions is not a problem if you just check your cruising guide and plan your arrival accordingly.

We encountered a 2 1/2 kt current through the cut carrying us towards the bridge. We have a cat so it was not a problem, but a monohull might not have been so lucky. There was a significant current through the bridge which is offset to the eastern bank.

Toogoodoo Creek Anchorage (Statute Mile 495)
On 4/30/12, as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 495 ‘“ who has entered Toogoodoo Creek lately and anchored? Did you have any trouble avoiding the shoal water at this stream’s entrance? Where did you drop the hook among the many possibilities on Toogoodoo Creek?

Anchored there on 4-6-13 Just follow the chart plotter in and watch the depth sounder it was a piece of cake. Lots of Swing room, Draft 5 ft had 10 ft under the keel at low tide. Lat 32 Deg 39.390 N Long 080 Deg 16.258 W. Good Holding ground Mud buttom. Enjoyed our stay. You can go back in the creek as far as you feel comfortable with the water depth you want.

Anchored there last fall, no problem getting in , went about 2 miles back and anchored at the intersection of Little Toogoodo….lots of current, but that’s to be expected in SC waters. Beautiful area.

Toogoodoo Creek is an excellent anchorage. You have little or no local traffic to “wake” you. You’ll probably have the anchorage to yourself. If not, there’s plenty of space in the length of the anchorage. It’s relatively open to wind, but well protected and generally calm waters.
It takes a few miles off the ICW to get around the long bend, into the straight part of the creek. Anywhere in the straight part of the creek works for anchoring. Be aware there are 8′ tides in the area, so there will be a strong current that reverses every six hours with the tide change. I personally use two anchors, one upstream and one downstream, for extra security.

Thoroughfare Creek Anchorages (Statute Mile 389)
On 4/30/13, as part of a South Carolina Wish List, I posed the following question:
Statute Mile 389 ‘“ one of our very favorite anchorages anywhere along the Southeastern USA coastline, is found on Thoroughfare Creek, west of AICW marker #73. Who has dropped the hook here lately? Did you cruise upstream and drop the hook abeam of the high, sandy cliff? Did you dinghy ashore here, and, if so, what did you find?

I anchored off the sandy bluffs on a misty late afternoon in January and it was still one of the most enchanting places I’ve anchored on the ICW. The next morning was even more amazing. I expect it’s not very pleasant in weather warm enough for local boating though. I understand it is jet ski heaven.

The spot by the sand dune is a beautiful anchorage. You can beach the dinghy and go ashore. The property is part of a SC wildlife refuge and has some walking trails. One of our visits to this anchorage was on a warm, spring Sunday afternoon. A large group of young folks were having a party on the beach with loud music and drinking. They had fast boats which they only ran at full throttle through the anchorage. It was unpleasant and unsafe. We pulled anchor and moved to Cowhouse Creek for a quiet night. Be cautious on weekends.

Charleston Maritime Center (Charleston, SC, on Cooper River)
On 4/30/13, as part of a South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 465 ‘“ anyone found a berth at the Charleston Maritime Center, west of marker #36? Please describe your experience here. Did you find enough shelter from choppy water? Did you have any problems with the depths? Did you take the opportunity to walk to the nearby Harris Teeter supermarket? How about some dining recommendations for restaurants close to this facility?

We’d tried more than once to get in. Last fall we were successful and secured two nights in November by calling a week in advance. Our experience there was positive. The staff was helpful. We didn’t find a problem with boat wakes, but we may be more tolerant than some. Harris Teeter was a short walk away and was a great place to provision. While I can’t name a particular restaurant, we’ve eaten at a few and found them to be really good. We enjoyed the short walk to the old marketplace and downtown.
Our boat is a Beneteau 36CC sailboat with a 5.5 ft draft.

Charleston Maritime Marina is best entered at slack tide. Does not have protection against strong northeast winds with subsequent surge! There are definite ship wake issues. Fish is four blocks away, and the Harris Teeter is expensive, but has anything you could ask for. The Aquarium is right there and worth a visit. Patriot Park is a water taxi ride away and a nice afternoon. The aircraft carrier was quite interesting.

Stayed several nights at the center. We did have to plow a bit of mud at dead low tide with our 5’3″ draft to get to our slip. there is a shallow hump inside to the southeast. Once at our slip we had several feet at low tide.
Walking to Harris Teeter is easy, a very well stocked market.
We loved the easy access to the historical district. Biking or walking is great.

Great Location, easy walk downtown, fuel prices are good. The facilities are a long walk from the docks. NO hiding the chop with winds out of the North or Northeast and then you add commercial traffic and can be kind of rough in there.

The Charleston Maritime Center around the battery is greatly preferred; closer to downtown, easy walk to provisioning at Harris-Teeter, and more welcoming and appreciative of your business!

Bull Creek Anchorage (South of Calibogue Sound and Hilton Head Island – Statute Mile 565.5)
As part of a 4/30/13 South Carolina Wish List, we posed the following question:
Statute Mile 565.5 ‘“ Who has dropped the hook on Bull Creek, north of AICW marker #34? How far upstream did you cruise before anchoring? What depths did you find on these waters?
Responses follow:
Bull Creek, one of my favorite anchorages. I go up around the first bend and anchor off the dock. There is some shallow water there so you don’t need to put out too much rode. However, it drops off fast so you want to be sure you don’t drag into the hole at the bend in a strong westerly wind. There can be enough fetch in such conditions to make it less comfortable than you might expect. Some boat traffic going to and from Bluffton by the back way.
