Shad Fishing In the AICW/Waccamaw River, SC
The legal season for shad gill net fishing runs from Nov 1 to Mar 1. Gill fishing is only allowed on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Fortunately for we cruisers, there’s only a few days remaining in the season. In the meantime, watch for these local fishermen and, as usual, give their small boats a very slow, no wake pass! As a kid, I helped my Dad and Grandad tend their gill nets in the Ocmulgee River in GA and we often fished well after dark.
Helping a friend bring his new boat from Little River, SC to Charleston, SC, we were cruising the ICW on the Waccamaw River when we cam upon a man in a jon boat waving an orange PFD at us and motioning us away from a line of what we thought were crab trap markers. We went on around and a few miles later had much the same experience only the guy waved and pulled up to us and told us he had a net strung between two floats.
We spent the night at a marina in Georgetown, SC and asked the staff about this. Apparently, there is a certain time of year when people are allowed to place nets across the river to catch shad. They cannot block more than one half the river and must be on duty the entire time to warn boaters away from their nets. Just FYI.

In 2010 – 2011 Bucksport Marina, now a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, closed for an extended period of time for renovation and expansion. More on Shoaling in AICW – Ashepoo Coosaw Cutoff Problem Stretch (Statute Mile 515)
With his 6.25 ft draft, Capt. Pascal keeps a very sharp eye on the Waterway’s trouble spots and we can rely on the accuracy of his reports and the depths recorded here coincide with earlier reports of 5.8 feet at dead low in this perennial “AICW Problem Stretch” south of Charleston, SC. Penny’s report of Jan 23 suggests that the channel is shifting with the renewed shoaling.
I found shoaling to have worsened significantly over the summer in the southern section between the Coosaw and Rock creek. I follow the exact same path and found depths to be almost 2 ft shallower than back in May. I had planned to arrive with 3′ of tides remaining and ended up squeaking by with just a ft under the wheels (6.25 draft). This is definitely a play-the-tide stretch for most and close to Lil Mud River level.
Everything else so far is pretty much unchanged since spring.
Here are my notes:
MM516 Ashepoo Coosaw Southern section, 6′ to 7′ MLW most of the way but some 4.5 to 5′ MLW spots just north of R184. This is down almost 2′ from this spring on the same line. Make sure you come in or exit the southern end of the cut at an angle as shown on the charts (by R184/G195).
A new can G177 has been added by the FL G 177 to mark the shoal.
Note that the northern section of the cut off bet R166 and R172 is no problem, over 12′ MLW.

Just came through the Ashepoo-Coosaw Cutoff roughly two hours after high tide, +5.8′, and the lowest depth readings were 10.8′, suggesting there would be only 5′ at low. Looks like severe shoaling; suggest transiting with this in mind.
So far, in our transit south this year from Sandy Hook to Delray Beach, this is the first serious shoaling we encountered.

Just came through the Ashepoo Coosaw cutoff 3 times in the last 6 weeks. At the southern end near the Coosaw river, I saw 6 ft. at dead low tide. Favour the red side going south.
The other two times I came through at mid tide rising and had no trouble. My vessel draws 5 ft. Hope this helps.

Just cleared the Ashepoo Coosaw Cutoff 1 hour after high tide with a 5 ft draft. Lowest water reported was 12 ft. near red 184. The new green can 177A is off station. Currently in the grass about 100 feet south of green day marker 177.

These updated reports are pretty accurate except showing even more shoaling as green markers 169 and 177 are standing in grass with 20-30 feet of sand/mud on the bank at just before low tide. Depth sounder went off more times than I care to count. stay exactly between R 184 and G 185 then hug south bank to avoid extending shoal just after before heading to R 186. Favoring red as mentioned in another report put us in the mud for a quick thrill.

Praise for Bucksport Plantation Marina, AICW Statute Mile 377
In 2010 – 2011 Bucksport Marina, now a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, closed for an extended period of time for renovation and expansion. We pulled into Bucksport Marina after deciding that too late to anchor in very deep anchorage. Nice accommodations at the tall wooden dock with great dock hands. There are floating docks but not for our 21 foot beam. had dinner at the Seaweed Grill and was very pleased. the steak was exceptional and the grilled cabbage was delicious. they have been open only a short time but are off to a good start with the new owners. Many locals were coming in as we finished our early dinner. would stop here again.

A Good Experince at Barefoot Marina (Statute Mile 353.5)
Barefoot Marina, a NEW SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR AS OF JANUARY, 2012, is the new incarnation of what was once Barefoot Resort Yacht Club and Marina. This facility overlooks the AICW’s western flank, opposite the huge Barefoot Landing Shopping Center and the “Barefoot Landing Transient Dock,” which is associated with the shopping center.
Do not confuse Barefoot Marina and Barefoot Landing Transient Dock. They lie of opposite sides of the Waterway/Pine Island Cut, and are under entirely different ownership and management.
We recently moved our boat from Florida and after checking out a lot of marinas selected Barefoot Marina at North Myrtle Beach. It’s pretty far north of Beaufort but lots of benefits; Great people, excellent docking system, fresh water and the most reasonable rates that we found anywhere. Also have diesel at very competitive rates. The web site doesn’t provide a lot of info but does include contact information. Check with Bill or George, they really work to make your stay pleasant.

South Carolina AICW Bridge Opening Woes And Schedule Changes
Bridge opening schedules can be confusing even with the best wording and with the frequent changes that seem always to occur during the busiest seasons; Chris experienced two of such changes. We have confirmed and listed below the most up-to-date schedules of openings for three of the busiest bridges in SC.
We are very late this year in our trip south. One thing we have encountered is “on signal” bridges which are no longer such. Socastee and Ben Sawyer have new restrictions. Socastee was on the half hour and BS was on the hour on a non-holiday Friday.

Wappoo Creek Hwy 171 Bridge:
From April 1 to November 30, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (last opening at 3:30), and on Saturdays and Sundays, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, the bridge opens on the hour and half-hour. From December 1 to March 30, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, the bridge opens on demand (last opening 3:50). From April 1 to May 31, and from October 1 to November 30, Monday through Friday, the bridge does not open at all between the hours of 6:00 am to 9:00am, and from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. From June 1 to September 30, and from December 1 to March 30, the bridge does not open at all between the hours of 6:30 am to 9:00 am, and from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

Georgetown, SC Dining Review (Statute Mile 403)
Normally, I confine my role here on the Salty Southeast Cruisers’ Net’s “Cruising News” sections to comments and introductions to fellow cruisers’ messages. However, last week, Dec. 5-9, 2011, I undertook another one of my land yacht trips of the South Carolina coastline, calling on every marina and repair yard between Georgetown and Beaufort.
As part of this sojourn, I had occasion to review several of the restaurants along the way. Restaurant reviews are a really dirty part of my job, but someone just has to do it!
The thought occurs to my tiny mind that the cruising community could really benefit from a fuller understanding of the outstanding dining choices available in Georgetown. This medium sized community has an embarrassment of riches when it comes time to slake a healthy appetite!
All the dining attractions mentioned below are within walking distance of the marinas set along the town waterfront/Sampit River, including SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Harborwalk Marina. If you choose to coil your lines at Georgetown Landing Marina on the Pee Dee River, your walk to the downtown dining attractions will be longer, or you might choose a quick taxi ride.
If it’s breakfast time, spare no effort to make your way to Thomas Cafe (703 Front Street, 843-546-7776), a Georgetown institution for as long as I can remember. Everything here in the breakfast line is good, but the Blueberry pancakes are particularly worthy of honorable mention! Thomas is also open for lunch, and while there is nothing fancy about the mid-day bill of fare, I’ve never had anything I wouldn’t call quite tasty!
Another advantage of breakfast at Thomas Cafe is the local color you will enjoy. This is where ALL the locals meet for the first meal of the day, and every time I’m there, some interesting tid-bit of local news comes my way.

We really love this place, as well as Morsels across the street. Breakfast at CB is to die for, soup and sandwich for lunch is excellent and we take their soups along for the trip. Same with Morsels. In spring their tomato pies cause my eyes to roll back with joy.

Georgetown Waterfront
Come lunch time, or just time to restock the on-board larder, run, don’t walk to the Kudzu Bakery (120 King Street, 843-546-1847). Don’t let the name fool you. This establishment is more of a delectable bistro that just a bakery. Sure, you can (and I always do) purchase some of the best chocolate chip cookies on earth and fresh breads, but there are also outstanding sandwiches, a full selection of wines and many, many other gourmet type grocery store items to be had. I’ve talked with more than one cruiser who stops at Georgetown specifically to facilitate one or more visits to Kudzu. May I be so bold as to suggest you join that gastronomically happy throng!
When it’s time for a good evening meal, after a long day on the water, there are at least two totally outstanding choices waiting to greet you in downtown Georgetown. In fact, we often try to time our stay in Georgetown for two nights, so that we can give our full appreciation to both the Rice Paddy (732 Front Street, 843-546-2021) and the River Room.
Neither yours truly nor my first-rate, first-mate, Karen Ann, have every had anything at the Rice Paddy we did not consider absolutely outstanding. However, the Snapper Picatta with Capers and Lemon Butter, served with Creamy Grits, and the Rice Paddy’s Lump Crab Cakes served with Creamy Grits, are the stuff of legend. Beef lovers are not forgotten either. Trip before last, I was in bliss partaking of the Rice Paddy’s Filet of Beef, with Shiitake Mushrooms and Madeira Cream Sauce! Yummmmmmm!
Just diagonally across the street from the Rice Paddy, Sid and Sally wait to greet visiting cruisers at the River Room (801 Front Street, 843-527-4110). Try to get one of the tables overlooking the Sampit River. That way, you’ll not only enjoy great food, but a superb view as well!
Again, it’s hard to go wrong with the River Room’s selections, but the grouper stuffed with crab meat and topped with hollandaise sauce, as well as the 8 oz. Chargrilled Duck Breast with Chorizo sausage and finished with veal demi-glace, are both particularly worth of note!
There are other dining choices in Georgetown, to be sure, but this article is already becoming lengthy, and you are now clued in on our favorite dining choices in this historic community.

Thomas cafe right near the clock tower is the quintessential down home breakfast spot. I judge these spots by the quality of their home fries. Formica tables, folksy waitress, big table occupied by the local debating society lingering over coffee, this cafe has it all.

Good Words for Harborwalk Marina and Georgetown, SC, AICW Statute Mile 403
Harborwalk Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR! is the northwesternmost marina on the downtown Georgetown/Sampit River waterfront. Check out their shiny new, first-rate, shower and laundry building!
Stayed in Georgetown for 4 nights waiting for our autopilot to arrive from Defender. Mike and Chris at Harborwalk Marina could not be nicer. We paid for showers (we were anchored), bought our gas from them along with ice. We would come back to this town again and again. Nice places to eat, shop, provision and it is safe to keep the boat.

Harborwalk Marina in Georgetown SC. We second the recommendation below. We were going south TG week and ran into a mechicanal issue as we were docking for 2 nights at Harborwalk. Chris and Mike arranged to get us a tech we could trust to correct our problems. We had to order parts, (1 week to get in) so we arranged a good monthly rate with Chris and enjoyed TG week in GT and returned home by car. Our boat remains there until Jan. Everyone at the marina is first class. Very dog friendly marina and town. We could easily stay there for an entire season and be happy. Just steps to all the downtown amenties but very laid back.

I happened to stop at Osprey southbound a year ago. Returning this spring I made a special effort to reach there arriving just at closing time. No problem. I requested an easy exit space because I had one cranky engine. No problem. The staff are all helpful, cheerful and positive. They are on my list for the next trip.

Reports from Calabash Creek Anchorage, AICW Statute Mile 342
Calabash Creek lies to the north off the Waterway just south of the SC/NC state line. This anchorage can get very crowded during the busy season, but if you can find a spot, there are two fine seafood restaurants accessible just upstream by dinghy.
Please note the Navigation Alert linked below indicating the possibility of shoaling at the intersection of the Waterway and Calabash Creek. Also, we have personally sounded, and other cruisers have reported, as little as 4 feet entering Calabash Creek during MLW.

Fit three boats in here on north shore between red #2 and the green #3 other side of dolphins. Moon tide carried 12-14′ during high. Expect 6 tonight I hope

Good Words for Dolphin Cove Marina, Ashley River, Charleston, SC
Dolphin Cove Marina overlooks the Ashley River’s eastern shores north of unlighted daybeacon #16, northwest of the charted “R TR”.
Reggie: I hauled my sailboat our summer before last. My Marina is Ashley in Charleston Harbor. Took the boat up the Ashley River to Dolphin Cove marina for the haul out. they have a big lift and very reasonable rates. very nice and easy to deal with. their cheap rates are reflected in the deferred maintenance of the facilities but the nicer places are more expensive.

Myrtle Beach Yacht Club on Coquina Harbor has been a great stopping place and a friend to cruisers for years. Naturally, they are a Salty Southeast Cruisers’ Net Sponsor!
We stayed the night 11/2/2011. Great place, nice docks, nice people. Marina closes about 5:30 so be there before. One of the best spots on the east coast. need to take a cab to get supplies, West Marine within a 10 min. cab ride.

A Visit to Toler’s Cove Marina, Charleston, SC, AICW Statute Mile 462
Toler’s Cove Marina guards the Waterway’s northwestern shore southwest of the Sullivan’s Island swing bridge.
Visited Toler’s Cove Marina November 12 thru 14, 2011. The marina has been overwhelmed by the condo-plex called Marsh Harbor at Toler’s Cove. The only facilities available for transients are an overnight tie up at the fuel dock, access to a rudimentary head (toilet and sink), and 30/50 amp electric and water. Approach depths and dockside depths were in the 6 to 8 foot range at low tide. Fairways are very tight, with no real room to turn a 37 footer around. Had to drift away from fuel/face dock, then back out fairway, make a reverse T, and then exit past the condos. Best thing about the facility was the price, still 1.25/foot in Charleston area.

Praise for Boat Shed Marina, AICW Statute Mile 403
Boat Shed Marina guards the northeastern banks of the Sampit River along the downtown Georgetown Waterfront.
We stumbled upon the Boat Shed Marina when once again we were not able to find suitable anchorage in the harbour. Can not say enough about how great they were with us. Even gave us a lift to the Ice House to fill our propane tank.

Recommended Anchorage North of Charleston, AICW Statute Mile 450
Charlie’s recommended anchorage is a no-name creek between Price Creek and Capers Creek, just west of Marker #90 and slightly north of mile marker 450.
This potential anchor down spot is not included in our “South Carolina Anchorage Directory,” as none of us has ever personally researched these waters. We will certainly correct that oversight soon, and then, and only then, will we consider these waters for inclusion in our anchorage directories.
Cruising News:
11-11-11- For a fair wearther anchorage, this is the spot. Easy to get in– we came in at about 1hr before low- and no problem if stay in middle. After seeing 12-20′, came in about 300 yards and dropped in about 8′. No wind protection, but that means the view is 360 beautiful– sunset and dawn. Far enough off the ICW so no wake from all the snow birds heading south– nice to watch the caravan! Anchor hung at first try. Very mild current. We’ll be back here in good weather. Full bars on verizon and about 15 air TV channels.

7ft Draft Plows through Fields Cut, AICW Statute Mile 575
Fields Cut lies just north of the intersection of the Waterway and the Savannah River. Shoaling there has always been an issue and even with last year’s dredging, shallow depths can be expected. Fortunately, most of us do not have a 7ft draft with which to contend.
If Captain Dennis had favored the northern and northwestern banks as he cruised south, round the last turn to the south, north of Savannah River, he might have made it without imitating a plow. Follow the link below for the detailed specs on this AICW problem stretch to learn more!
Came thru Fields Cut today with our 7ft draft Catalina 42 and had to plow our way thru the last 100 ft before the Savannah River with tide at +1 ft. This was center of channel.

Center and green is indeed shallow, you must favor the red side there (see my notes posted in October) and you ll have plenty of water!

Depths Decreasing through Isle of Palms, SC, AICW Statute Mile 460

As Palmetto Moon reported last week, the water gets thin between AICW markers #111 and #119, north of the Waterway’s entrance into Charleston Harbor. While not yet designated an SSECN Problem Stretch, we have established a Navigation Alert for these waters and caution should be exercised through Isle of Palms.

Sanctuary and crew transited southbound through Isle of Palms, SC, at 08h30 this am (Thursday, 11/3/2011). It was low tide, and our chart plotter reported the current datum at +0.91 ft.
That stretch of 4 – 5 miles has some very shallow spots, with some depths in mid-channel as low as 5 ft. We heard others talking about what they were seeing, so I pursued a route slightly favoring the red side of the channel. We found no less than 6.9 feet. Here’s the detail:
At R’118′ – 7′ mid-channel, 9′ red side
At G’117A’ – 40′ – 50′ off the marker, 7.5′
At the un-named creek 1/2 mile north of inlet creek – 6.9′
At G’119′ – 7.5′ red side of channel (There are crab pots in this area on both sides of the channel. Some extend into the channel. To favor the red, we passed some of the crab pots on the red quarter to our port side. Found favorable water depths there today. Of course, the crabber will move the pots, so the advice remains, favor red.
At G ‘121’ – 8.5′ red side of channel
With lower datum or celestial lows, this stretch would definitely be a problem for most cruising boats.

Barefoot Landing Bridge to Close to Car and Foot Traffic in November, AICW 353.5, Myrtle Beach, SC
If you have a hankering to visit Barefoot Landing as you pass through Myrtle Beach in November and December, then Sue is correct in recommending the transient dock at Barefoot Landing on the east side of the Waterway .
Cruising News:
Barefoot swing bridge [Barefoot Landing Bridge] will be CLOSED to car traffic ONLY for at least 60 days starting first week in November, for repairs and maintenance. will still OPEN FOR BOATS. which means if you stay at Barefoot Resorts Marina, it will be a 20 minute cab ride to get to stores and restaurants on the Barefoot Landing Transient Dock side which is on your port side after the bridge, going south. There are 102 stores and 19 restaurants there, plus the marina is open 24/7 365. There is always someone there to take calls or help you dock. They have free wifi as well.
