    • Southport and Southport Marina (Statute Mile 309)

Well, you can’t go by me in any discussion of Southport, as I spent many a boyhood summer here, whiling away the hours along the old harbor waterfront, crabbing under the docks, and fishing the Frying Pan Shoals offshore. I love this place. And, let’s not forget, Southport Marina is a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

We were there on 3/19/2010. Nice people and facilities. Spent a good bit of time walking around town and have never seen any town where every house was is supurb condition. They take a lot of pride in their town!
Also, check out their maritime museum.
Don’t think there is a real great restaurant around. We did eat at Loco Jo’s which is where it seems everyone gathers after work for a drink. Their fresh fish was well prepared, but the place is nothing fancy

    • Manteo Waterfront Marina (off Roanoke Sound)

Manteo Waterfront Marina is now run by the Town of Manteo. It boasts 53 slips that can accommodate boats up to 140 feet. The marina is situated right next to historic downtown Manteo on a boardwalkLike Captain, we adore Manteo, and when we are docked at Manteo Waterfront Marina, it’s even better. There’s generous shopping and great dining with an easy stop of the docks, and dockmaster Carl is simply one of the very best. And, let’s not forget, this facility and the city of Manteo is supporting the cruising community by being a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

We really love this little town! It’s only a short jog off the ICW and a great stop. We have brought our 44 ft boat here from Baltimore for the winter months for the last few years. As noted by others, the turn into Shallowbag Bay can be a little confusing, but take it slow and you should find plenty of water in the channel. There are lots of big boats that make it in without problems. There was a 100 footer here at the town marina last week.

    • Big Trout Marina (Pamlico Sound, Mainland Shore)

Big Trout Marina is the only cruising craft friendly marina on the mainland shores of mid-Pamlico Sound. It is located in the tiny but friendly and commercial fishing craft rich village of Engelhard, NC. There is a little cafe at Big Trout, open for breakfast and lunch only, and a small grocery store is within walking distance of the docks. Glad to hear (below) that the Far Creek entrance channel, which serves Big Trout Marina and Engelhard, is in good shape!

      Hi Claiborne
We just arrived at Big Trout after calling Edna and Frank at home (they did not answer the Marina number, but it is very early in the season ‘“ March 14). Frank met us at the dock when we arrived at 6:30 PM and was very accommodating.
The Channel in was never less than 10 feet ‘“ we stayed about 30 feet off the green markers as one of the posters suggested.
Thanks for the recommendation ‘“ we found it in your book and then went to the website. We had planned to go to Manteo, but a 5 hour bridge closure yesterday at the Onslow bridge kept that from happening.

    • Mile Hammock Bay Anchorage (Statute Mile 244.5)

Miles Hammock Bay is really the ONLY secure anchorage between Swansboro and New River. Its entrance is subject to shoaling, and don’t dare go ashore. This is US Marine Corps property, and part of Camp Lejeune.

Spent a very calm night here on 21 Feb 2010. We were the only boat in the anchorage as would be expected this time of the year. Leaving the next morning we found two dredges at the New River Inlet. We did bump going past them but after calling the lead dredge, we found the right path and never saw less than 10 feet.

    • Seapath Yacht Club (Wrightsville Beach, off AICW via Motts Channel, near St. M. 280)

To easily access Seapath Yacht Club (transient dockage is usually readily available), you must leave the AICW just south of the Wrightsville Beach Bridge, and traverse Motts Channel. This passage can get shoally between dredging cycles. Call Seapath for the latest channel info.

This was our 3rd stay at Seapath. It is an easy marina to dock at and use of the courtesy car is a plus. We might have hit them on an off day, but I found the crew not as friendly and helpful as our last visits. Bought fuel ( diesel ) for $2.99/gal.

    • St. James Plantation Marina (Statute Mile 315)

Sounds like things are really looking up at this facility, located directly off the AICW, south of Southport. The last I heard, there was no restaurant here, and no provisioning either. Has anyone else had good luck at St. James Plantation?

I can’t believe I’ve never stopped here before. We heard about St. James from several friends and had to try it ourselves. All I can say is that this place is not to be missed by cruisers. At $1.05 per foot and a great restaurant, grocery store/deli, easy access fuel dock and very helpful staff ‘¦’¦ it’s a steal !!!!! We will stay here for sure on our trip back north and hope to be able to enjoy the Tiki bar in warmer weather.

St. James Plantation “IS” a very nice stop. Great walking all over the roads next to the marina and viewing the beautiful homes. Four 18 hole Golf Courses right on the property.
We stayed there in late Nov for a week then left for home for the month of Dec. Arrived back after New Years 2010 and headed for FL. Very secure place to leave a boat, and great monthly rates.

    • Caspers Marine, Swansboro, NC (near St. M. 229)

Caspers Marine is the closest facility offering transient dockage to the Swansboro downtown historic/shopping/dining district. And, it’s only a quick walk from Caspers to Captain Charleys Seafood Paradise, home to possibly the best fried seafood in the world!

We have stayed at Caspers a number of times on both our Endeavour 42 Sloop and our current Eagle 40 Pilothouse, and we cannot say enough about the marina and the town. Admittedly the marina is a bit exposed, but the docks and skill of the owner have always made us feel safe and secure. We were `stuck’ at Caspers with our sailing club for two days of gale force winds, gusting to 60, and everyone had a great time and never felt threatened. The owner is a real professional!

    • Dowry Creek Marina (Feb. 2010 Report, near St. Mile 131.5)

Dowry Creek Marina guards the northern shores of the AICW/Pungo River upstream of Belhaven, NC. This facility is consistently praised as one of the friendliest marinas in North Carolina.

Stopped at Dowry Creek Marina on Feb. 18th. We were greeted at the fuel dock by 2 liveaboards who expertly tied our dock lines. Mary, the owner, was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. The water is turned off because of the cold weather and the diesel was $2.65 gallon. We were able to watch the Olympics that night due to great reception on the dock.

    • River Dunes Marina (off the Neuse River, near Statute Mile 173.5)

River Dunes is part of a sumptuous, low impact development. It is accessible by water from Neuse River, by way of Broad Creek, east of Oriental. Just to be clear on this, River Dunes is one of the very best marinas in North Carolina, and I’m not just saying that because they are a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

We are staying at River Dunes as I write this note. Just got back from a fantastic dinner at the restaurant and a long hot shower in one of the most superb showers I have ever been in, complete with a steam bath in the shower itself. Docking was a snap with all the room afforded in the fairways and basin. Dock hand, Meredith, was great and made us feel special. There was a golf cart for us to use to get around the grounds which are nothing less than beautiful. The water has been turned off at the docks but there is a faucet in the pool area that can be used with your jerry jugs. We will be sure to stop here again on our way north in the Spring.

    • Dudleys Marina (Statute Mile 229)

One of the best things about docking at Dudleys, is you can easily walk across the bridges and causeway to downtown Swansboro, and eat at Captain Charleys Seafood Paradise. They have the best fried seafood we’ve ever had anytime, anywhere! (do NOT go to Charleys and order broiled seafood).

We stayed at Dudley’s Marina for three days just after January 1, 2010. It was so cold that we had to cover the engine room vents to keep it from freezing, even with heat on. Dudley’s is a great place, and we should all support them for helping us keep the cost of cruising down. We were there simply because it was too cold to move. The cost was minimal, because of the $.75 per foot rate. A car is available for the short run to Swansboro and necessary grocery stores and even a Lowes. We look forward to returning in the spring.

    • River Forest Marina and Repair Yard (Belhaven, NC, near St. M. 135.5)

River Forest Marina and Manor will be the first facility spied upon entering Pantego Creek and Belhaven Harbor. The repair yard portion of this operation lies on a different, nearby creek, and it’s usually best to let the yard personnel move your boat to these waters.

For those interested, I ran across a very nice Marina in NC where I am having my boat’s Interior refitted. River Forest Marina, Belhaven, NC has folks removing and installing new carpeting, and another crew
recovering the old furniture with updated materials similar to the new Carver 40s.
Their dock rates are also reasonable, especially if you want their full service marina to do work. So is the hotel which is outta sight!?!
While they are at it, they are waxing and polishing the boat and painting the bottom.
All are very reasonably priced. I mention this because good people doing honest work at a fair price should be recognized!!
      Highly recommended with 5 Stars.

    • Northwest Creek Marina (on Neuse River, off the AICW, near New Bern, NC)

Galley Stores, on the Trent River in New BernNorthwest Creek Marina is a nice facility, but don’t forget Galley Stores Marina, on the Neuse River in New Bern, NC. These latter folks are a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

Cruisers have been lauding their marinas. I would like to throw NW Creek into the hat. It is well protected, and, at $6.65 per foot is pretty reasonable. Bud, Dawn, and Clarence run the place and do make some demands. They expect you to have long lines so THEY can move your boat forward in the slip in case there is a hurricane. They have never lost a boat in a huricane.
A great attribute is the number and quality of marine services available. A number of technicians from Hattaras who were laid off, are skilled craftsmen in woodworking, fiberglass, engines and systems. They do great work at much less than shipyard prices.
However, the best part is the caring and supportive attitude of everyone I have met.

    • Don’t Miss Anchoring in Cape Lookout Bight (usually accessed from Beaufort Inlet)

I could not agree with Captains David and Dixie more! Some of the very best nights we have ever spent on the water have been enjoyed while swinging on the hook in Cape Lookout Bight!
While it is possible to find your way to this anchorage from Harkers Island and Back Sound, by way of Barden Inlet, this route has some real shoaling problems, and the aids to navigation are scattered and hard to identify on some parts of this passage. Most cruisers will want to cruise to the Bight from Beaufort Inlet.

We live in NC and love the Beaufort/ Morehead area. If you decide to stay there be sure to spend some nights out at Cape Lookout. There are no marinas, restaurants, traffic, …. just a lot of quiet and beautiful beaches. You should be able to watch the weather and have several 60 degree days. Perfect for walking the beaches.
You will be far enough away from light pollution to see the milky way at night.
Be sure to take a spud launcher to launch apple halves to the wild horses. Launch a couple and the horses will appear shortly. Fun to watch the horses chase the apples.
Watch the tide in this area. It can have a 6 foot swing and turns in a hurry. I’ve grounded there once and have seen locals from Harkers Island get grounded there also (course they would rather say they got liquored up and fell asleep than admit to making a nautical mistake).

Went to Cape Lookout on June 9th. Beware – the Horseflies will feast on you! Keep your cabin doors closed and check your screens! I am still scratching! (Of course we went on shore and got eaten there too)

Early in the morning we saw sea turtles swimming in the bight, they are a bit shy. Bring a mask and snorkel for seeing the underwater life.

        Enjoy!

Agree with everything but launching the apples. The national seashore restricts feeding the horses because they’re digestive systems have been adapted to the shore grass with low nutritional value. Eating apples, carrots, etc. can give them colic. The horses are not regularly checked out so there’s not anyone there to treat this condition. Better to row over to Shackleford and hike in to see them. The shelling on Shackleford is outstanding.

    • Wilmington Marine Center (on the Cape Fear River, near downtown Wilmington, NC)

The only problem I’ve ever see with the Wilmington Marine Center is that it’s located in the heart of an industrial maritime business park, and it’s a long way to the downtown Wilmington historic/business district, with its many good restaurants and historical attractions. If you don’t have ready automobile transportation, it’s a long taxi ride into town.

We stayed at Wilmington Marine Center on the Cape Fear River. It is a surge free hurricane hole at Buoy 59 about 12 miles from the ICW and a couple miles before Wilmington. (A cruise from the marina to downtown Wilmington for lunch is delightful especially when guests visit.) The facility is secure and remote. Are you planning to stay with the boat? There is nothing within walking distance.

    • Bridge Pointe Marina (New Bern, NC, on the Neuse/Trent River)

Bridge Pointe Marina (formerly the “Ramada Marina”) is actually located on the Trent River, on the opposite shore from the New Bern Grand Marina (at the Sheraton Inn). Captain is quite correct about the old, Trent River swing bridge currently being under reconstruction. As long as this span is closed, it’s like going around your thumb to get to your little finger, to reach downtown New Bern, with its many good restaurants and interesting shops.

We have stayed at two marinas in the North Carolina area: Bridgepointe Marina in New Bern (5+ months) and Washington City Dock in Washington (1 week). Both are 20+ miles from the ICW and in mostly fresh water. New Bern is a much larger community with restaurants, historical areas, etc. The Bridgepointe Marnina is probably best described as “adequate” – not the best place we stayed and certainly not the worst. Get a slip on the dock nearest the clubhouse, I believe that’s dock A. Docks B and C are less protected from waves/wakes. If you leave in the spring, you should be able to avoid the layer of river mussels that grows on EVERYTHING under water during the summer.
The bridge that provides easy access to New Bern from the marina is under construction and therefore closed. You will need a car there to get around since you cannot cross the bridge. The marina does not have a courtesy car.

    • Strong Currents in Swansboro/White Oak River Anchorage (St. M. 229)

Anchoring at the southern foot of White Oak River, abeam of the Swansboro downtown waterfront, has long been a popular thing to do. The presence of a town dinghy dock makes this an even more attractive proposition.
HOWEVER Captain Nichole is right on target in her posting below when she speaks of “strong” tidal currents which scour this anchorage. We, too, have had trouble when the current shifts. Clearly, extra care is called for when anchoring on these waters.

We anchored here last night and had a really hard time. We had dinner on a fellow cruisers boat and came back out to find our boat had dragged over 100 feet. We have a fishermen’s anchor that is rated for 60 foot boat (we have a 28 foot sailboat) and it was good and set when we left. When the current shifted the chain, the boat sailed around the anchor, fouled it and caused us to drift. (which has never happened to us before.) We grounded briefly which saved our boat from hitting any other boats but it was a tricky proposition to move the boat back to a good spot in that current, we set out a second anchor and spent most of the night checking it on the half hour to make sure we were staying in one spot. The current is swift and some of the holding ground is not great especially when the current switches, when we pulled up anchor today to go to Dudley’s Marina to sit out a blow(75 cents a foot by the way, worth it to not have to deal with an anchoring nightmare) our anchor had fouled again. Use heavy anchors if you are going to anchor here and try to be near your boat when the tide switches because it is a very challenging location.

    • Boats And Property Tax in North Carolina

I purloined the three messages below from the “GL” (Great Loop) mail list. As you will see, all are in regards to fulfilling boat – property tax regulations in the Tar Heel state.

Looking for input in regard to NC Tax on Transient boats. May need to leave my boat in NC waters for Dec / Jan. Boat is legally registered both with Federal Documentation and State Docs in RI. “RI Stickers” on forward pilothouse windows.

Talking to the manager of the marina in NC, he tells me that he “walks the docks” on Jan 1 and must list all boats at the Marina and supply info to the NC County where the Marina is located. County would then send me a letter (address supplied by Marina) in regard to taxes due. “What then” ? I know that the locals in the Marina usually move boats to SC for a week and then come back to NC.
Thanks for any and all thoughts on this. Tried finding info on NC State Web sites, but no luck in getting to any solid answer to the subject.
      Bob

Call the tax office in the county you plan on staying and ask. I live in Craven County and the tax office has been helpful to cruisers. Marinas are obligated to list all the boats on January 1 just like we have to declare all property then also. I don’t think you will owe anything but they will probably just ask for the marina bill when you check in and out again or something equally simple.
      Phil Odom
      Havelock, NC

We faced the exact same thing in ’06-’07 when we wintered Morning Star over inNew Bern at the Sheraton Skysail Marina . We talked to the gals at the tax collector’s office and they took out information. When we left, we dropped by their office again and showed them a copy of our final bill. Since our time there was less than the 180 (I think) days that would have triggered the tax we thought we were done. But they sent us a bill anyway! We got it all resolved with a quick and easy phone call. No big deal, just keep your records.
      Regards,
      Randy Pickelmann
      MORNING STAR

I am no expert on this subject but if you are going to leave it in or around Wilmington on Jan 1, I advise going to SC and there, there is no question as you have atleast 90 days. New Hanover and Pender Countys are very diligent in collecting property tax and the rate is high. It was very difficult to get an answer on the property tax isssue from either the state or New Hanover county. Don’t be casual about this or it might haunt you.

    • Upper Pungo River Anchorages (Statute Mile 127.5)

If the wind cooperates, this is one of the most beautiful and restful spots to anchor imaginable. The most downstream anchor down spot on these waters recommended in the Net’s “North Carolina Anchorage Directory” nestles right up against a pine woods. When the wind sighs through the needles, it always lulls us right to sleep.
